Brother and
Sister Clubs
There is no doubt that our quick success was with the help
of our Brother and Sister Clubs.
South Dakota
State our Sister Club
SDSU showed their presence on the 2nd weekend of March in
2002 to help us have a "coaching & controlled scrimmage".
This was the first true physical contact WSC would have in
club history. SD State that day went way out of their way
coming down to Wayne, just after they arrived back in Brookings,
SD after a 14 hour drive from their Spring Break Rugby Trip
to Texas to live it up with the Fort Worth RFC.
Having only one-days rest, they hopped in their cars and
drove back down South all the way to Wayne, and back to Brookings
on a Sunday afternoon. After helping out WSC in several game
situation scrimmages, a small game was played with WSC jumping
on the scoreboard for the very first time. After the WSC/SDSU
women's scrimmage, the Jackrabbits of SD State also scrimmaged
the Men from WSC. The girls of SD State we not scarred at
all of taking on the boys from Wayne and everyone enjoyed
a great afternoon going against different color of jerseys
for the first time.
Sisterhood was displayed at the bowling alley as the first
ever post-game social was displayed. The ultimate challenge
of the "boat race/line-out" relay was ran, and the
WSC women pulled out the winners in a photo finish over the
heavily favorite SD State women, that have had plenty of practice
at this event. The evening ended with hugs, kisses and plenty
of memories with our first time visitors to Wayne America.
The
Albatross of Storm Lake our Brother Club
If it were not for the Storm Lake Albatross there may not
have even been a WSC Club. Our Club founder, Darrin Barner
first played for Storm Lake, after his college football days
were over at WSC. It was preached to us over and over again
that Storm Lake would make this game very enjoyable on and
off of the field.
Our rugby brothers being just 2 hours away took our 25 rugby
rookies under their long wings and helped improved a very
young and inexperienced men's side of WSC. Storm Lake hosted
WSC first away game and topped of the night with a very fun
filled social for both the Cats and the Kittens of WSC. Storm
Lake being in the Iowa Union has many games on the other side
of the state, but rest assured, whenever the Albatross have
an open weekend, they will travel miles just be on the sideline
to cheer on their Brother and Sister club no matter how far
away.
The Albatross our currently doing everything they can to
help WSC improve in their rugby skills, due to the fact that
after graduation, job placement will be assisted for those
players who would like to move up to men's league and repay
our Brother Club with membership in Storm Lake after their
college days are over.
