Professional Staff Senate Meeting Minutes
October 5, 2006

Call to order:

Derek Anderson, Chair, called the meeting to order at 2:03 p.m.; a quorum was not present.

Attendance:

Senators present: Mary Carstens, Derek Anderson, Lin Brummels, & Marcus Schlichter

Absent: Brook Bredenberg, Kevin Halle, Loren Kucera, & Bev Buhrman

Guest: Bill Long – Support Staff Senate representative

Approval of minutes:

Approval of minutes from September 2006 was deferred until the November meeting.

Committee Reports:

Mentoring: Lin Brummels: Two mentor/mentee matches have been made.
Social: Mary Carstens: A pot-luck dinner is planned for 10/17/06 during fall break. It will be held in the Niobrara room from 11:30-1:00. Mary will be sending out invitations soon.
Recognition: Derek Anderson: No Report
Continuing Ed: Kevin Halle: No Report
Membership: Loren Kucea: No Report
Hospitality: Bev Buhrman – No Report
Policy: No Report – Athletics has named Brook Bredenberg as their Senate member
Communication: Marcus Schlichter: The mailing list has been updated and Marcus will double check with HR to add new employees.

New business:

Derek poled the Senate about the type of salary raise to negotiate at NSCPA. There was general agreement to recommend a percentage increase rather than a flat rate.

Professional Staff Recognition: Derek will send a description to Marcus to send out to the members. Lin will send Marcus the Professional Staff Recognition nomination form. Once this information goes out, all professional staff are invited to submit recommendations for recognition.

Constitution changes were discussed. Lin will revise the language on how to approve a change in the constitution and submit this back to the Senate at the November meeting. It was noted that some people are having problems bringing up the constitution on the website. This will be checked into (Webmaster Note: This has been fixed and should be working now - use CTRL F5 to refresh any pages not working).

Weingarten Rights: Lin brought information to the group about the law that requires employees have the right to have a representative present when there is a possibility that an employee may be disciplined or terminated. These were brought to light by the Support Staff Senate. Derek will send out information about this employee right.
